Homemade Healthy Strawberry Jam Recipe- Paleo, GAPS, Refined Sugar Free, Vegan Option

I had an idea to make something like cinnamon buns for dessert, only with strawberry jam inside it instead of a cinnamon sugar mixture. The strawberry buns flopped (gotta improve the dough recipe) but the strawberry jam that I made to go inside it came out so wonderfully that I think this will be my go to recipe for strawberry jam. It's refined sugar free, pectin free, and is Paleo and GAPS legal and can easily be vegan too. You can make it with only whole fruit, and it is not too difficult to make. I highly recommend this recipe.

Homemade Strawberry Jam Recipe- Paleo, Refined Sugar Free, Vegan Option

Ingredients:
6 ounces/170 g fresh or frozen strawberries
5 ounces/140 g date paste or pitted dates
1 cup water
2 tablespoons honey or other sweetener of choice (optional)

Instructions:
1. Put strawberries, dates, and water in a pan.
2. Mixing frequently, cook until the water is nearly all evaporated.
3. If adding, add the sweetener and cook until thick, mixing often.
4. Puree using a food processor, blender stick, or blender until smooth.
5. Use as you would any other strawberry jam, spread on crackers or bread or dropped into yogurt or even as topping on ice cream!
Enjoy

Have you ever made a healthier strawberry jam? What was in it? Does this look like a recipe you'd try?
What is your favorite use for strawberry jam?

  1. I'll try this, was looking for a jam recipe to put in puff pastry. (Which immediately disqualifies it from 'healthy.')

  2. I always feel sick when looking at jam with more sugar than fruit, and even the "good" ones are 55% fruit to 45% sugar. And I'm not giving the kids artificial sugar, so I'm never happy with the ones I buy. I'll try this, especially since I have a bag of pitted organic dates someone gave me that I didn't know what to do with, and have strawberries, blueberries and raspberries in the freezer. Let's see what they think...how long would this last in the fridge?

  4. I just discovered your interesting blog and thank you for taking the time. I am always on the look-out for organic fruit-only preserves which are hard to find and expensive when available. After giving it a try with a bunch of wrinkly organic grapes which no longer appealed to me to munch on fresh, I was so excited to discover that jams and fruit sauces could be made from tired but still flavorful fruit just by boiling them down to whatever thickness I wanted. To berries, I usually add finely chopped apple and to apple a bit of pineapple juice and apple pie spice. Haven't gone back to commercial applesauce or jarred preserves since unless it's a really unusual flavor.
