Vegan, Processed Food Free, Onion Dip Recipe

photo oniondip_zpsdd11ad68.jpgI really loved onion dip growing up. My dad would make it by mixing either sour cream or mayonnaise (usually sour cream) with onion soup mix, etc. We'd dip corn chips into it, eating piles at a time...
I learned that onion dip was a popular dip for vegetables and since had it many times with crudites at parties.
But for a long time, I have not had any onion dip, despite loving it. Reason being that not only do I not use dairy or eggs, making sour cream and mayo off limits, I also don't use processed foods like onion soup mix.
But I decided to try out making onion dip for crudites served at a birthday party we had today for Ike (more on that tomorrow) with my homemade vegan mayonnaise, and no onion soup mix. I don't have an exact recipe to share, because I didn't measure, but I wanted to share the ingredients and the amounts used, so you, too, can play around with these ingredients and get a delightful and healthy, processed food free, onion dip.

Vegan, Processed Food Free, Onion Dip Recipe

Ingredients:
Mayonnaise. (I used vegan flax based mayonnaise but any is ok, vegan or egg based, homemade or store bought). My guess is I used 1 1/2 cups of mayo.
Lots of onion powder (I made mine by grinding dehydrated onion flakes) My guess is I used 2 tablespoons.
Drop of garlic powder. My guess is I used 1/4 teaspoon.
Drop of salt. My guess is I used 1/2 teaspoon.
Drop of honey. My guess is I used 1/2 teaspoon.
A little vinegar. (Optional. Depends on how vinegary your mayo is to begin with. Add this last.) My guess is I used 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar.

Instructions:
1. Mix mayo with onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and honey. Remember less is more- you can always add more of an ingredient but you can't take it out.

2. Add more of the previous ingredients if necessary.

3. If it needs a bit more tang, or a bit more of a kick, add some vinegar.

Serve with crudites or chips.

Are you a fan of onion dip? What do you put in yours? How do you tend to serve yours? Does this look like a recipe you'd probably make?

  1. I love onion dip...the only thing I might try (for non-vegetarians) is use something like Worcestershire or fish sauce to get savory into the mix. I think original onion soup mix uses dehydrated beef broth.

Hm. What would be umami for vegans?

  3. This is my dip recipe, which I make with yogurt, but I bet it could be made with vegan mayo. In researching that post, I was surprised to learn how many nasty ingredients and common allergens are in typical instant onion soup mix!

I use dried onion flakes without grinding them. If you make the dip in advance, they become nice and soft but still give it a little texture.

Annemarie, one of the best sources of vegan umami is nutritional yeast flakes, which are used in my dip, and I have a link from there to more info about them. They are gluten-free and soy-free.
