I let it sit in the sun for a while (time varies depending on what I'm doing). I then bruise the fruit a little by mashing it with a spoon, potato masher, etc. I let it sit in the sun a while longer. It is best to use cold or lukewarm water. The bugs can easily be strained out. I just don't use the berries if they have mold growing on them. Maybe you could try it with the cold or lukewarm water and see if there is a difference in the taste. :)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1300660817354328186.post-12996740491564877272015-07-30T02:26:23.895+00:002015-07-30T02:26:23.895+00:00I just tried this today. The berries do not let go very easily. I used about two dozen heads to two gallons of water. Just crushed the heads up in the water with a potato masher and let them sit for a half hour or so, then strained through reusable coffee strainerAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1300660817354328186.post-7944570598250827552014-08-05T17:38:35.195+00:002014-08-05T17:38:35.195+00:00...good stuff..i added cane sugar and brought to a......good stuff..i added cane sugar and brought to a boil. I've made jellies from Queen Anne's lace and elderberries, and we used plantain for bruises (I still use it for that). Day lilies are also delicious steamed lightly or in fritters, and the tender unopened buds are really good steamed and served with a bit of In Progresshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00016717446330168499noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1300660817354328186.post-42057281426705040342014-04-05T20:31:40.751+00:002014-04-05T20:31:40.751+00:00i love sumac. most people aren't aware it'...i love sumac. most people aren't aware it's edible!Life In Chilliwackhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11035068118625471867noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1300660817354328186.post-44427772303457409682014-02-05T02:17:40.969+00:002014-02-05T02:17:40.969+00:00I don't think sumac grows around here, but I c...I don't think sumac grows around here, but I can get powdered sumac at the Indian markets.
