Check Out This Tasty Biltong Recipe

I know all about biltong from being married to a South African for over a decade; it is a dried meat that hails from South Africa, but I've never had a chance to actually taste it, because when my former brother in law made a batch it had gluten in it. Biltong is sometimes sold in powdered form, to be used as a seasoning in things. This recipe sent to me from a reader uses biltong powder and sounds absolutely delicious.

When you are on a budget and you want to serve something delicious and easy, Biltong shavings or powder will be the perfect item to have. It is inexpensive to stock, has a great shelf life, and you can add it to a wide range of dishes.

Cheesy Biltong Omelette Recipe

  • 3 large eggs (non-organic or organic)
  • 50 ml fresh total fat milk
  • A pinch of Salt
  • A pinch of Baking powder
  • 1 Tablespoon of Biltong powder
  • 1 Tablespoon of spring onions
  • 1 Tablespoon of chopped cherry tomatoes
  • Garlic (according to personal specifications)
  • Rosemary seasoning
  • 2 Tablespoons of Camembert cheese, chopped up for easy distribution

Method for preparing the omelette

1. Place the eggs and all the other ingredients for the omelette in a bowl and beat until they are mixed.

2. Cover a nonstick pan with spray-on cook and place on medium heat

3. Place the egg mixture in the pan and allow it to simmer lightly. High heat will cause the eggs to burn quickly because of the milk in the mix. This will give the other ingredients a chance to cook through without the milk burning.

4. Place the spring onions and garlic on the eggs first. This will give the egg its flavour by soaking the onions’ juice into the base.

5. Add the cherry tomatoes and sprinkle the rosemary seasoning onto onions and garlic.

6. Add the Biltong powder and camembert cheese over everything and fold the omelette so that the cheese can melt all the ingredients together. The rosemary compliments the red meat the same way it would when you make a roast.

7. Camembert cheese is excellent for gut health, and its creamy texture makes for really easy melting. It is a very salty cheese, so you only need to use it a little bit at a time. The rind is also [perfectly safe to consume, so there is no need to remove the skin before using it.

Method for adding the filling

Once your omelette is a light golden brown on the outside, you can remove it from the pan. A slightly golden brown exterior gives the omelette a bit more texture and crunch. You do not need to add any more seasoning to this recipe.

The fantastic thing about biltong powder and camembert together is that they are already flavoured, so you do not need to add anything other than the rosemary to compliment the biltong’s flavour.

Garlic and spring onions are perfect for creating a delicious aroma in the home while cooking and having significant health benefits.

Garlic is suitable for your immune system and actively reduces blood pressure.

Spring onions are high in vitamin c and calcium.

Good food is meant to be enjoyed. With tasty recipes, they can be the highlight of any dinner party, gathering or family time, so whatever you do with your biltong, do remember that it’s more than just a tasty snack; it can also be a delicious meal. Enjoy!
