4 Benefits of Sharing Your Parenting Experiences

I like to talk about parenting and do so quite often. I mean, that is to be expected from someone with a blog named Penniless Parenting if you know what I mean. But seriously, parenting can sometimes be a really lonely experience, because no one is at home with you when you're dealing with your kids other than maybe your partner, if you aren't a single parent, so no one really gets what you're going through. But connecting with other parents and talking about the positives and the challenges is a good way to get support and not feel quite so alone in your parenting. Here are some benefits of sharing about your parenting experiences.

As parents, we all have unique experiences raising our children. We may have different techniques for dealing with the kids, which seem to work. At the same time, parents also have dilemmas along the way. As the children get older, many changes occur, and parents must learn how to adapt to these changes. When they were younger, it was simpler to expect the children to abide by the rules you impose. However, growing up makes them want to be independent and learn how to make their own decisions. A parent must find a healthy balance to maintain communication with their children, allowing them to speak their minds while respecting them.

As you go through life raising children, it would be nice to have people you can talk to about your experiences. They may be parents with similar experiences or new ones who can always use some parenting advice and learn all about parenting from those who have been through what they are currently facing. Sharing your parenting experiences benefits the people you share them with. It is beneficial for you, too.

Mulled Wine Beef Roast Recipe -- Gluten Free, Allergy Friendly, and Delicious

Before I proceed with anything, I need to say that this picture doesn't show the final product- it was taken post much of the cooking but before the final 2 hours of cooking it, sliced and baked in the same sauce, so it ends up darker and is more tender.

This recipe was something that I stumbled upon by chance, since I had some open red wine (either cabernet or merlot) that was slightly starting to sour, and I figured cooking with it would be the perfect use for it (since it was no longer tasty to drink). I used it for a roast I had in my freezer and then was trying to think of something different to do with the roast than carrots and potatoes. Then I thought about what went well with red wine, and mulled wine was what came to mind. I threw in a bunch of spices that went well with wine and voila, that is how it was born.

Regarding the cooking method- beef roast, if not cooking properly, can end up quite dry, as it needs a long time to cook before it softens. I needed beef broth for a recipe. I've written about my beef hack, where I pressure cook beef to tenderize it for use in other dishes, and I decided I'd be using that for my roast. First pressure cooked. Then baked with seasoning. Then cut and baked again to soak up the juices.

The result? Absolutely delectable meat that my son said was his favorite way I made beef, so I made it again to be able to write down the recipe this time. Feel free to adjust the amount of sweetener in this recipe- I like my beef sweet but it's up to you how sweet you want to make it.

What are multi-family homes and are they right for you?

My family and I live in a multi family home that we purchased a few years ago. We live on the bottom floor and rent out the top floor for tenants. For us it was the most logical decision, as the rental income pays more than half of the monthly mortgage, and a home the size of the space we live in would have a mortgage significantly higher than what we pay every month after the rental payment comes in. There are other reasons as well why someone would choose to buy this type of house. Read on below.

When you are looking to buy a home, there are lots of different things to consider. A multi-family home can be a real good place to get started if you are looking to invest in the real estate business. There are plenty of multi-family homes for sale in CT just now. They can not only be a great investment as a property to live in but also has the potential for huge financial benefits in the future. However, knowing what they are and how you go about purchasing one is a very different question. Here is a little advice on purchasing a multi-family home.

Want New Clothes Without Spending Money? Host a Swap Party!

It's been a while since I've been to a clothes swap, but they were one of my favorite ways to get clothes for myself and my children. This post from a reader inspired me, and I think I want to arrange one ASAP because of how great they are.

Adding a fresh set of threads to your wardrobe is always an exciting experience, no matter the season. However, buying new clothes can get pricey, especially when you purchase them from big-name brands. Thankfully, there is a way to acquire some amazing outfits without breaking the bank. You can do this by hosting your very own swap party with friends.

A swap party is an event where people trade clothes that they no longer want for those that they actually like. After all, just because someone has fallen out of love with a clothing piece, doesn’t mean that it’s worn or drabby. Who knows, a friend’s unwanted garment might be your next great closet item. The best part? You won’t have to pay a dollar for your stylish threads, as hosting a swap party costs close to nothing. Besides being good for your pockets, swap parties also have a lot of other benefits.

When "Drugs" Are Actually Good; How Narcotics Are Now Being Used Medicinally

I wrote this article a few months back for someone but in the end they didn't want it published, so I had it just sitting there, unused and unpublished. But it is so jam packed with useful information that I felt I needed to share it with you. Between when I wrote this and now I got my medical marijuana license and it is very helpful for my health issues.

------------------------------------

Don't do drugs.

Don't do drugs.

Don't do drugs.

Did you grow up with that message repeated to you until you could repeat it in your sleep as I did? Drugs are bad, people who do drugs are bad, stay away from drugs, etc...

The thing is, as there has been more education on the topic, people are starting to realize that the topic of "drugs" is complicated indeed.

There is a reason why there have been legalization and decriminalization of marijuana and other drugs in many places in the world- there has been more and more awareness on the beneficial medicinal uses of some of these drugs. Yes, some drugs are bad, bad, bad, and can permanently destroy your brain. However, other so-called drugs are not only not harmful but are actually beneficial for many people. This isn't nearly as black and white as we were led to believe.

5 Health Benefits of Eating Lobster

Frugality is important, living within your budget is important, but including the occasional luxury into your budget is also important. If you decide that lobster is that splurge that you want, here are some health benefits of that seafood.

When you hear about lobster, there's one thing you're probably thinking about — the price. And yes, lobster tends to be one of the highest-priced items on any menu you can get.

But there's some good news. For one, lobster is extremely simple to prepare as boiling is one of the most delicious ways to enjoy the flavors. This means you can pay the grocery store price and have an unforgettable dinner without paying restaurant prices.

The second is that when you do splurge on lobster, you're not only getting heaven in your mouth, but it's also incredibly healthy for you. It often gets a bad rep for raising cholesterol levels, but it's full of vitamins and protein. The unhealthy reputation it receives is actually due to the way it's sometimes prepped and served.

What to Consider Before Moving to a Foreign Country

When I was 18 I picked up and moved across the globe to get married, to a country that I'd spent a year in at the age of 16, but not knowing much of anything about the country. I had a decently fluent grasp of the language because my mother spoke to us in that language since we have roots from there, but that was all I had going for me. I was very clueless about the culture and the job market, and especially the cost of living (and especially housing) vis a vis the standard wages there. I got a very rude awakening a few months into my living there, and as time went on and I had kids and tried to improve my financial situation I just learned more and more about how difficult things were to improve things financially here. (That's how this blog was born.)

Fortunately, things are much better for us now, I'm more or less used to the cultural differences, and I love my life here 15 years later, but it might not have turned out that way. Many people who move here and invest lots of money into the move turn around and leave within a year or two. If you are considering moving to a foreign country, please do your research so you know exactly what you are getting into before you do a drastic change such as that. Read the following post from a reader about important things to consider.

Are you thinking of moving to a foreign country? It's a big decision, and there are a lot of things to consider before making the leap. This blog post will talk about some of the most important factors to think about before making the move. Whether you're moving for work or for pleasure, it's important to do your research and make sure that the country you're moving to is right for you!

My Recent Frugal Accomplishments

This list of frugal accomplishments I recently did is shorter than my standard.list, but I wanted to share them with you nonetheless. Ok, maybe not so short- it seemed a lot shorter before I broke it down into different categories and added a few things that I'd forgotten.

Landfill Emissions and Their Impact on the Environment

When I started this blog, my main goal was to write about frugal living, because I was broke, but I soon noticed how many of the frugal things I do also end up being much better for the environment. Less waste is both frugal and good for the planet. This article below is a breif summary of how all our throwing things out damages the environment.

The amount of waste produced in the USA is mind boggling.

The quantity of waste that is dumped in the landfills is even more appalling. Each year, millions of tonnes of waste are dumped in US landfills with dumpster rentals or other means.

Most of the waste dumped in local landfills is made up of organic matter. Such organic matter can stay in the landfills for a very long time. This organic matter often emits gasses that can have an adverse impact on the environment.

Landfills and Waste Management

Landfills are where our trash ends up. They're essentially dumps that fill up with garbage brought by dumpsters as time goes on. These landfills are essentially a resting place for all of our trash. But they don't stay there forever as such, as this trash naturally decomposes.

Landfills emit a number of different pollutants into the air. The most prominent is carbon dioxide which contributes to climate change and is harmful to the Earth's ecosystems.

However, landfills also emit methane which is a greenhouse gas that has a greater effect on climate change than carbon dioxide. Landfills also emit chemicals like dioxins which are harmful to human health. These chemicals can travel through water and air. Even if we live far from a landfill, the impact of these chemicals is harmful and can be detrimental to everyone’s health.

Gas Emissions Caused by Landfills

Landfill gas emissions are one of the issues which are causing irreparable damage to our environment.

In spite of the fact that we are under the umbrella of environmental protection, the fact is that landfills are the most significant source of trash emissions. Over the years, local authorities and private organizations have made a lot of effort to reduce the amount of emissions released by landfills.

A couple of years back, no one would have thought that landfills emit greenhouse gas that harm our environment. But the truth is that they do, and this gas is responsible for speeding up global warming and climate change. The solution to reducing landfill emissions is simple enough but is, unfortunately, not very feasible. What we have to do is to reduce, reuse and recycle.

Negative Impacts of Landfill Gas Emissions

The other problem with landfills is that they can leak, causing harmful contaminants to get into the water supply. The earth underneath the landfill can also collapse and sink, which can damage homes, roads and buildings that are above ground.

Soil movement isn't the only negative effect of a landfill, either. The greenhouse emissions from landfills are unhealthy for humans to breathe. Not only is it unsafe for nearby humans and animals, but it can also cause global warming.

Landfill Leakage

A landfill can be leaking. Perhaps it was slowly leaking for some time, or perhaps it just happened one day, the result of heavy rains that evening. Whatever the cause, the black sludge can seep through the cracks in the walls, sinking through the soil and into the groundwater.

The surrounding community's wells would begin to run dry. Then, it is only a matter of time before the sludge reaches a major water supply, and when the townspeople come to investigate the cause of the water shortage, they will find it is the landfill.

Clearly, landfills can leak. This can be a problem not only because it can damage the environment, but because its consequences can be costly. However, one of the most important things that can be done to make sure landfills are stable and won't leak is to have a landfill layout done according to the latest specifications.

In order to prevent leakage, it's important to have a system in place that allows for water runoff from the landfill. The best way to do that is by making sure that the landfill is built to prevent liquids from seeping through the ground and causing it to saturate the soil.

It's also important to make sure that any pipes or drains have watertight seals to prevent liquids from coming through. Essentially, if this is done correctly, there should be no way for toxic liquids to leak.

Steps You Can Take to Reduce Landfill Emissions:

If you are concerned about the environment the best way you can take action is to reduce the amount of waste you create. There are countless ways to achieve this. You can start by using reusable shopping bags, bringing your own water bottle, and using reusable/refillable containers. If you have a lot of junk at home, rent a roll-off dumpster to get rid of it all at once.

You should also get in the habit of composting your food waste. Composting is a process of breaking down organic material and making use of it to fertilize your plants. This process contributes to reducing your carbon footprint and will also encourage you to buy less products since the food will decompose much faster.

Using a combination of the following tips can help reduce the impact of the amount of waste and landfill emissions that you or your business produce. Electricity is responsible for much of the greenhouse gas emissions and associated waste, so take steps to reduce energy consumption by installing energy efficient appliances, turning off lights and electronics when they are not in use, and turning down the thermostat during the cooler months.

Landfill gas emissions are a serious issue that needs to be addressed as soon as possible. We can't continue to produce so much waste, especially in our digital age. We also can't afford to continue to damage our environment by releasing so many pollutants in the atmosphere.

What Rights Do Step-Parents Have After Divorce?

A friend of mine is in an unhealthy marriage that she admits she needs to leave. But there are step children involved that she loves, which makes divorce for her complicated. Of course there are sometimes cases where the parent needs to divorce because the step parent is unhealthy for the step child. Do step parents have any rights to their step children post divorce? It is complicated. Read more more below.

With around one third of marriages ending in divorce over the last 50 years, along with the steady rise of blended families, Step Parent Parental Responsibility and the rights of step-parents have understandably become areas of interest. We look at what those rights are and what you can expect as a divorcing step-parent.

Beef Tongue with White Wine and Mushrooms Recipe -- Gluten Free, Paleo, and Allergy Friendly

Apologies for the less than appealing picture; I was trying to take a more beautiful picture, but my friend asked me what I expected, its tongue after all. But I can assure you that, despite looking weird, it was delectable meat and I highly recommend it, if you are a fan of tongue in general. (I'm not quite sure why eating an animal's tongue is any weirder than eating their chest or legs, but hey, people can have their preferences. They just are missing out on something amazing, since there is no meat as soft as properly cooked tongue.)

I threw together this tongue recipe because I wanted to try something a little bit different than my sweet and sour tongue, and I still had a bunch of discount-bought tongues in my freezer. I know many people like using red wine in their recipes with meat, but I've found the pairing of white wine, mushrooms, and beef to be wonderful and so decided to try that with tongue. It didn't disappoint. In fact, it worked out so well that I cooked up another batch as soon as the first was consumed, both to be able to enjoy it again, but also so I'd have the recipe to share with you.

Something to note if you've never made tongue before is that cooking it takes a long time. Like really long. I'll cook tongue the first time 6-8 hours simmering or longer, or 2-3 hours in pressure cooker at pressure. If you don't cook it long enough, it will be rubbery. There are no shortcuts here.

How Can I Add Class to My Home On A Budget?

It can be very frustrating to live in a home that feels like it doesn't suit you. I remember going through that in my old home. Moving isn't always an option when your home stresses you out, but there are ways to make your home more enjoyable, and if you enjoy classy, you want your home to be classy too. Here are some ways that you can add class without needing to move to a more expensive or different property, and without spending too much money.

Having a stylish home can be quite important to some people. Not only can it make your life seem well put together, but it might also improve how you feel about your living spaces. You may often spend time looking at expensive properties, or even the décor choices made by your favourite celebrities. However, it is probably not feasible financially for you to have these same items within your own home. Instead, you might want to consider some of the more cost-effective ways that you can make your home appear that much more stylish.

For this reason, parents and wards need to take the proper steps to make children stay productive.

Many times it's challenging to keep kids on track with tasks and responsibilities. However, with a few strategies or techniques, parents can improve the productivity level of kids.

Exciting News!

I have really exciting news, nearly 3 years in the making!

In the summer of 2019, I needed to fly to the US (long story, ridiculous situation), and I decided that while I was there I would renew my American driver's license that I had gotten at the age of 18 and expired on my 21st birthday. In my country, in order to get a drivers' license, you need to take over 25 lessons with a paid driving instructor, but if you have a license from another country you can convert it to a local one. Since mine was expired, I needed to get a new one before I could transfer mine, and so decided that while I was in the US I would take another test. I paid for a few local driving lessons before flying to the US, since it had been 12 years since I had last driven, and I wanted some refreshers to ensure I'd pass. And fortunately, within my 3 days of being in Cleveland, I took my driver's permit test and my driving test and passed both on the first shot. This was especially important for me to be able to do then since I had planned on getting divorced and wanted to be able to be more independent.

I'd thought it would be a simple thing to just switch my license over to here since I passed the test in the US on the first try, but since it had been so long since I moved to my country, I needed to first take the theory test, which I thought would be simple, since I passed in the US in three different states on my first try (Ohio, New York, and Washington State), but here I decided to take the test in the local language since I knew how terrible their English translations were, but I failed that test when I took it in the local language because there were a lot of trick questions and I had a hard time seeing through the tricks in the local language. I did a bit more studying and then took the test in English, and bad translations and all, I passed it that time.

In the meantime, I drove with my kids on our trip to Bulgaria, and taking advantage of my newfound American international drivers' license, I started driving locally with it too, even though you're only allowed to drive with your foreign license for one year after becoming a citizen here. And because of that, getting a local license went on the back burner. Until I got into a car accident here and insurance wouldn't pay for it since I had no local license, and I needed to pay $2500 out of pocket for repairs.

That got my butt into gear to actually get a local license.

The Top 8 Money Saving Tips for Families Saving for Their First Mortgage

Buying a home is many people's dreams, but it can seem but a pipe dream because of the amount of money it takes to buy a home, specifically the down payment. Here are some tips on how to be able to afford that.

Many young families are finding themselves in a position where they need to save money for their first mortgage. It can be hard to know where to start, but with a little bit of organisation and some creative thinking, it is possible to make big savings.

How Families on a Budget Can Save Money Grocery Shopping

Grocery shopping, in my opinion, is one of the best ways to start saving money, since it is something that even small changes can make big differences to your wallet, and you can implement these changes and see a difference right away. Here are some suggestions to keep in mind.

Do you feel like you're always stuck in a financial bind? Are you finding it difficult to make ends meet, especially when it comes to groceries? If so, don't worry – you're definitely not alone. In today's economy, it can be tough for anyone to stick to a budget, but that doesn't mean you have to give up on your dreams of saving money.

My Latest Extremely Frugal Buys

When my kids saw me putting these stuff on the counter to take a picture, they pointed out that if I just posted these things with no caveat, you'd think I only ever bought frugal things, But that isn't the truth, so for the sake of honesty, this picture is things I've chosen to share because they were the frugal parts of my shop that day, I bought other expensive things, but these deals excited me, hence sharing these.

What Should You Look For in a Family Home?

When trying to find the perfect home, you need to look out for specific things if you will be raising a family, often different than if you are just living on your own or as a couple. Here are some things you'll want to keep in mind while doing your search.

Buying a family home can mean looking for different things, compared to buying a home just for yourself and your partner. Here are some things you should consider.

The Last Day of My Much Needed Getaway

I desperately needed a vacation, after having been burnt out, but as my luck would have it, I ended up testing positive for corona on my first day there, so needed to spend my vacation in quarantine. To be honest, I didn't mind too much that I was in quarantine since my intention really was to veg out and chill and relax, not to sightsee, and for that reason, I chose a beautiful apartment with a jacuzzi (that I was able to afford because my amazing friend sponsored it), so it was a very pleasant and quiet and relaxing quarantine. I couldn't have asked for more perfect timing. Other than one thing.

I tested positive for corona in the late afternoon on Friday, my first day there, and after having tested negative on days 4 and 5, I was allowed to come out of quarantine on Tuesday, late afternoon. My bus ride home was originally going to be Tueday morning, and so I'd booked my stay from Friday until Tuesday morning. Because of quarantine and not getting out until after my bus would have been, I decided to stay over another night instead of going home after and getting home really, really late. But since I hadn't planned on an extra day, I tried to find the cheapest place to stay that wasn't a shared room in a hostel and I found one for $54. The first place I stayed at let me leave later than the general check out time, and the second place let me check in earlier so that I wouldn't be out and about before quarantine was over (even though just about 2 hours later I was allowed to leave quarantine), and got special permission from our ministry of health to change quarantine locations (which was hilarious because it was just for the last few hours of quarantine).

4 Reasons You Need Car Insurance

Car insurance is very important. As a frugal person you might ask why waste money on insurance... but it isn't a waste and will save you lots of money.

Whether you’ve just acquired your driver’s license or you’ve been driving for years, let this sink in: there are more than six million car accidents in the U.S. every year. That’s a frightening statistic. Even though you’re a good driver, there’s a high chance you’ll be involved in a car accident at some point in your life.

Another fact: around one in eight motorists aren’t insured, which puts uninsured drivers at risk of jeopardizing their lifestyle and savings if they damage another driver or their property.

Why Buying a Home Can Be Beneficial For Frugal Living

Why I Wouldn't Breastfeed a Child Again

I know, it's a weird topic for someone whose youngest kid just turned 8, but I was doing a lot of thinking about self care and knowing my needs and limitations (why I so desperately needed this break that I was on), and I wanted to share with you my thoughts and reflections about having breastfed my children.

So, let me take you back 15 years. I'm pregnant with my first and am determined to do everything right as a parent. I had a pretty miserable childhood, and I'm going to make sure to do everything right for my child. Be the best parent I could possibly be, making sure that they had everything emotionally I never had growing up.

Just, already there, you can probably see where I'm getting at.

I decided to go full on crunchy mama attachment parenting mode, intervention free birth, exclusively nursing, co-sleeping so my baby could feel comforted by me all night long, babywearing, and of course no sleep training. Add to that cloth diapering and being a stay at home mom... I read all the parenting books, worked very hard on doing the "How to Talk So Kids Will Listen" stuff, etc... Let my kids know that I'd be with them, no matter what, and they could always count on me.

I homeschooled them, at least one kid always, until my oldest was 12.

Nursing played a very big role in my life as a mother. I had heard that you shouldn't switch off between a bottle and nursing because at first it can cause nipple confusion and later it makes babies less interested in nursing because taking the bottle is easier. So nursing it was. Other than for a period of about a month where my then husband watched my eldest, Lee, while I was working (he must have been between one and two months for that duration). During that time he got a bottle from his dad, but then Mike said that he couldn't manage to get the baby happy, so from that point on I brought Lee with me to work, and no more bottles. After that month, he also started rejecting a pacifier whenever I tried giving him one. And from then on, that was it.

Chiropractic Care: Why You Should Consider It

I have chronic issues with my joints and muscles, specifically my spine and my pelvis, and I go regularly to a physical therapist. I haven't been to a chiropractor ever, but I know others that swear by them. My physical therapist recommended that I look into acupuncture and dry needling, which is done by a chiropractor, so I may just go to one soon. Here are some reasons why people love chiropractors.

If a person suffers from back or neck pain, their mind might automatically turn to a chiropractor when it comes to who they should see for relief. However, if their infant suffers from colic or they have problems with TMJ, they may think of other doctors first. A chiropractor can assist people of all ages, as they treat a range of health conditions.  A person seeking chiropractic care may find their range of motion improves, they become more flexible, and their mobility increases.

Chiropractors help patients improve their quality of life through manipulations and adjustments. Nevertheless, countless individuals remain unaware of the benefits of this type of care? Learn more from Accident Care Chiropractic about how this type of medical treatment can make your life better in many ways. The following serve as examples of the benefits a person will receive when seeking this care.

The Importance of ESignatures for Your Organization

I have issues with printers. I buy them and then ink runs out, and ink is so expensive that I never end up replacing it. So then I spent more money on a laser printer because overall they're more economical, and then that printer of mine doesn't work for some reason. So I end up without a printer and when I need to sign things (health declarations for school) I don't have a printed document, but then I end up using a digital signature. These are so useful for so many reasons; here are some reasons why you might want to use esignatures for your business.

Every organization generates a certain amount of paperwork in the course of its normal business operations. From contracts and agreements to basic forms and internal documents, much of this paperwork must be signed. Until recently, that required gathering together everyone who had to sign the document in person, but the popularization of eSignatures has changed all that.

My Much Needed Getaway, a Coronacation

As I wrote last week, I desperately needed a vacation because of being so burnt out, having been "on" for far too long. I looked for a place that would be enjoyable to just chill, hang out, and veg out in quiet for a few days. My goal was to stay at a home that had good amenities, the actual city or town it was in was by far not the important thing for me. I just so happened to have found a great Airbnb in a city that is a resort town, where people go scuba diving and snorkeling, and I said great, I'll go there- the accommodations are the main thing and the location is just an added bonus, maybe I'd do some snorkeling (I bought myself a snorkel and flippers about 3 years ago), but who knows.

Of course, as luck would have it, my daughter Anneliese came down with corona last week. I tested everyone in the family and the rest of us were negative. Two days later I started to feel sick, really bad sinus headache, muscle aches (but muscle aches are pretty normal for me), post nasal drip, a slight cough, aand exhaustion. I was sure I had corona too, but I took test after test (a few a day even) and they all came back negative, so I figured it must have been a sinus infection.

I came to this city, popped to the beach for a little bit, then decided to do a corona test, because I still had a hard time believing that I didn't have corona... and guess what? This time it came back positive. Of course, by Friday I was feeling nearly 100% better. And that, of all times, is when it comes back positive?

So now I'm in quarantine in the apartment here, and my stay has been extended until I finish quarantine. And you know what? I'm actually totally fine with that.

Business: Outsourcing In A Nutshell

A friend of mine has a motto, that anything you don't need to do yourself, you should delegate. No need to do everything yourself, because that just adds to your already full to do list. If you can get someone else to do something for you, then do it. This also applies to your business. Often outsourcing at least some of the work will free you up to do what you need to do, or give you more time to do what you are best at, and make money for your business.
