While we are a family of omnivores, we do eat many vegetarian and vegan meals as they tend to be much cheaper than meat based meals, or as Premeditated Leftovers would say- "economic vegetarians".
This is such a tasty recipe that I can never get enough of it. I especially love it on chicken, breaded eggplant, and noodles and I've even heard of it being used in place of cheese on pizza.
Best of all, its both chemical free and easy as pie to make it.
(Recipe is adapted from this original one.)
Vegan "Cheese" Sauce
Ingredients1/4 cup nutritional/brewer's yeast
1 teaspoon salt
Scant 1/4 cup unbleached flour, corn starch, potato starch, arrowroot powder, tapioca starch, etc...
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon dried yellow mustard powder
1 cup water
2 tablespoons healthy oil (I usually go with coconut, but use whatever floats your boat)
1 teaspoon cumin
2 teaspoons oregano (optional)
Instructions
1. Mix all together and whisk to make sure there are no clumps.
2. Bring to a boil over medium heat and mix while it thickens.
3. Serve!
This recipe makes a very small amount. You'll probably want to double it. Enjoy!
Ever make any recipes with nutritional/brewer's yeast? What do you make?
(P.S. For those wondering- I actually asked the owners of various health food stores and they told me that nutritional yeast and brewers yeast were the same exact thing.)
This is part of Vegetarian Foodie Friday.
